The Bubble

Maybe I'm odd, but aren't all people aware of the bubble? I've just gotten home from work. It was your normal day, many stupid questions, followed by sighs and stupid answers. I must ask, why do people have to get right up in your face to ask you a question? Shouldn't they know that it is uncomfortable? I realize that culture has a lot to do with it, but dang. I thought everyone was aware of the bubble?! If not they should be. To enlighten those who are unware of the boundaries of my comfort zone:

Here are some facts about personal space bubbles:
The average Tennessean needs a lesson.
  • The bubble is larger if you are talking to a stranger.

  • The better you know the person you're talking to, the smaller the bubble may be.

  • The bubble is usually larger for two men than for two women.
  • The bubble may be very small for a man and a woman if they are in a relationship.
  • The bubble may be larger than normal for a man and a woman who are strangers to each other.

  • The bubble size may differ for different cultures.

    The implied bubble:

Intimate distance for embracing, touching or whispering
Close phase - less than 6 inches (15 cm)
Far phase - 6 to 18 inches (15 - 45 cm)
Personal distance for interactions among good friends
Close phase - 1.5 to 2.5 feet (45 - 75 cm) <----- If I know you, feel free
Far phase - 2.5 to 4 feet (75 - 120 cm)
Social distance for interactions among acquaintances
Close phase - 4 to 7 feet (1.2 - 2.1 m) <---- Most likely this is you
Far phase - 7 to 12 feet (2.1 - 3.6 m)
Public distance used for public speaking
Close phase - 12 to 25 feet (3.6 - 7.5 m)
Far phase - 25 feet (7.5 m) or more

  3. And since when does backing up mean "I want you to come closer?" Am I sending a reverse signal?
